AAP Grand Rounds 11:58-59 (2004) Wireless Capsule EnteroscopySource: Mow WS, Lo SK, Targan SR, et al. Initial experience with wireless capsule enteroscopy in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease. Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2004;1:3140.
The diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) relies on various diagnostic modalities including esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, upper gastrointestinal series with small-bowel follow-through (UGI/SBFT), and computed tomography (CT) scan. A major limitation of these procedures is they do not provide direct visualization of all the small bowel mucosa. A wireless capsule swallowed by the patient can take 2 digital photographs every second for approximately 8 hours as the capsule travels through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The resulting 60,000 images are transmitted to a receiving device worn by the patient, permitting direct visualization of the mucosal surface of the gastrointestinal tract.
