The increasing prevalence of obesity in the United States affects both children and adults. In this study from Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, and the Cooper Institute, Dallas, Tex, almost 20,000 men aged 2083 without any current coronary heart disease, stroke, or cancer were divided into quintiles of cardiorespiratory fitness by exercise treadmill testing. Covariates analyzed included cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, and parental history of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
