In an informative and intriguing publication, the authors, from multiple institutions, sought to understand the relationships among uric acid, birth weight (BW), and maternal hypertension in children with hypertension. Using the database of the Hypertension Program at Texas Childrens Hospital, Houston, they retrospectively identified 95 children with new-onset primary hypertension. They analyzed family history, birth data (especially BW), and serum uric acid at the time of presentation with hypertension. The authors found that: 1) the mothers of children with primary hypertension were 1.5 to 4 times more likely to have hypertension than mothers of children with secondary hypertension, white coat hypertension, or normal
