The effective radiation doses with diagnostic CT have been shown to be similar to the amount received by Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb, who showed a small, but statistically significant, increased risk of developing cancer as a result of the radiation.1,2 Nonetheless, this study from Yale University shows that physicians and patients are not fully aware of the radiation dose and the risk associated with CT scanning.
This study included 76 patients, age 17 to 81 years, mean age 43 years, with mild to moderate abdomino-pelvic or flank pain seen in a 2-week period in an emergency department (ED) and who underwent diagnostic abdominal CT scans. The patients were surveyed after their
