In 2001, the authors attempted to contact all parents in Sweden whose child died from cancer between 1992 and 1997. Eligible families were identified by the Swedish Cause of Death Registry. Patients had to be diagnosed with cancer before 17 years of age and to have died before 25 years of age for their parents to be eligible. Among 561 eligible parents, 449 answered a questionnaire and 439 indicated whether they spoke about death with their child. Forty-three percent of respondents were men.
