Investigators from Penn State and SUNY-Buffalo collaborated to assess the effectiveness of a program of parental education about the dangers of violent infant shaking and alternative responses to infant crying, undertaken by all hospitals providing maternity care within an 8-county region of western New York State. This program was directed toward both mothers and fathers and included provision of a 1-page leaflet (Prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome, AAP), and viewing an 11-minute video (Portrait of Promise: Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome, Midwest Childrens Resource Center, St. Paul, MN). Educational posters were displayed on the wards. Prior to discharge, the parents were asked to sign a voluntary commitment statement affirming their receipt and understanding of the materials.
