To determine whether access to drug samples influences resident prescribing practices, researchers in Minnesota observed 390 decisions to initiate drug therapy by 29 internal medicine residents. The study was conducted over 6 months in an inner-city primary care clinic in Minneapolis. Pharmaceutical company representatives, not allowed contact with the residents, stocked a sample cabinet in the clinic. By random selection, 14 of the residents agreed not to use available free drug samples. Five drug class pairs were chosen for study prospectively. Highly advertised drugs were matched with
