Functional MR imaging (fMRI) plays a role in diagnostic and treatment decisions for children with seizure disorders. Before surgery for seizure disorders or for neoplasm resection, localization of eloquent areas in the brain is important. The eloquent areas of the brain are those involved in communication, including speech and comprehension of speech. Previously, the procedures used to assess these areas have included the Wada test, direct electrical stimulation, and angiography with imaging. The fMRI does not require the use of contrast material or catheterization and serves as a noninvasive alternative
