Investigators at the University of Edinburgh and Bristol University, United Kingdom, explored the relationship between walking to school and participating in other physical activity during the school day. They recruited 13- and 14-year-old subjects from 4 schools in Edinburgh and measured their activity level from waking to bedtime by using accelerometers. Mode of travel to school was determined through questionnaires. Three cohorts were compared: those who walked one way to school, those who walked both ways, and those who took a motorized vehicle both ways (there were too few cyclists to include in the analysis).
