Factors that influence duration of impairment of consciousness and recovery time in children aged 116 years (median age 6 years) admitted for treatment of seizures were investigated by pediatric neurologists at Leeds General Infirmary, UK. Consciousness was assessed and monitored using a Modified Paediatric Coma Scale, a version of the Glasgow Coma Scale for use in young children.1 This measures consciousness according to eye opening, speech, grimacing, and motor response, from a score of 3 (minimum) to 15 (fully conscious). In a total of 41 patients with complete coma scores, recorded at least hourly after seizures, median time for full recovery of consciousness was 38 minutes (range 3 minutes to 17 hours).
