| PICO Question: Among parents of obese children, what factors enter into treatment decisions and perceptions of treatment effectiveness? Question type: Descriptive Study design: Qualitative
|
Current guidelines suggest that treatment of childhood obesity should be family-based.1,2 Researchers from the University of Glasgow, UK, conducted in-depth interviews of parents of obese children who had completed a six-month dietetic intervention. They sought to identify and understand — from the parents perspective — factors that may have influenced the decision to seek treatment, barriers to engaging during treatment, and the parents perceived key outcomes of treatment. Parents were interviewed 12 months after their children had begun the program; qualitative techniques were used to analyze the data.
Of 79 families with a child 5–11 years old who had participated in the obesity program, 17 principal caregivers (14 mothers, two fathers, and one grandmother), of whom 10 were obese, completed the interview.
