In the ongoing effort to reduce neonatal mortality, the Young Infants Clinical Signs Study Group — a large international collaborative — evaluated the ability of first-line health workers in primary care settings to use simple clinical signs to identify ill infants requiring immediate hospital treatment.
Infants 0–2 months of age presenting with acute illness during study hours to primary care sites in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Ghana, India, Pakistan, and South Africa were enrolled. Babies with lethal malformations; those presenting for well child care, exacerbation of a previous illness, or only jaundice; and those needing immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation
