Researchers from Michigan recruited 50 adult volunteers to participate in a randomized, controlled trial of zinc acetate lozenges for treatment of the common cold. Study patients were >18 years old with cold symptoms for
24 hours. Exclusion criteria included pregnancy, immunodeficiency or chronic illness, or previous use of zinc lozenges to treat the common cold. The active lozenges contained 13.3 mg of zinc acetate.
