Cunningham and colleagues conducted a randomized, controlled trial to evaluate the effect of computerized physiologic trend data (HR, RR, pO2, Transcutaneous pCO2, BP, MAP, CVP, core and peripheral temperature and O2 sat) on short-, medium-, and long-term variables in a Level III NICU. Four groups of infants in Edinburgh, Scotland, who were <32 weeks gestation or 32 weeks gestation and ventilated for 4 hours or asphyxiated were studied: (a) no display of trend data (n = 215), (b) continuous display of trend data (n = 230), (c) alternating 24-hr display of trend data starting in first 24 hours (n = 76), and (d) alternating 24-hr display of trend data with no display for first 24-hrs (n = 79).
