One hundred and eight children with hypoxic respiratory failure were enrolled at 7 study centers. The children were randomized to receive inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) at 10 ppm or mechanical ventilation alone for a minimum of 72 hours. The oxygenation index (OI) was followed and an OI >= 40 for 3 hours or an OI >= 25 for 6 hours were considered treatment failures and the study terminated. Twice as many children in the control group were immunocompromised (33% vs. 17%), and they also had a larger proportion with chronic lung disease (27% vs 17%).
