A retrospective, case controlled study was conducted in Baltimore to identify clinical risk factors for seizure-related motor vehicle crashes in 50 patients with epilepsy compared to 50 matched controls who had epilepsy but no traffic crashes. The mean age of the epilepsy patients was 39 years (range, 1873) and the male: female ratio was 41:9. Seizure types were mainly complex partial (52%) and generalized tonic-clonic (36%). Seizure frequency averaged 2.6 per month (range, 060) in those with and 0.6 (range, 06) in those without crashes. The purpose for driving at the time of crash was commuting to a job in 60% and recreational activity
