Autoimmune Disease and Minocycline

The authors of this article were intrigued by a patient they encountered with an autoimmune syndrome secondary to the use of minocycline prescribed to treat acne. They undertook a literature review and found 82 patients with minocycline-related autoimmune symptoms. They suggest that these reactions can be divided into 4 categories:
A syndrome resembling drug-induced lupus was noted in 36 of the 82 patients, making it the most common minocycline-related rheumatic condition. It occurs after the patient has been treated with minocycline for a period of time (mean = 30 mo, range 672 mo). Symptoms consisted of arthralgia in 100% of patients, synovitis in 75%, and fever in 33%. All patients had a positive ANA, and 10 of 13 tested . . .
