Autoimmune Disease and Minocycline

The authors of this article were intrigued by a patient they encountered with an autoimmune syndrome secondary to the use of minocycline prescribed to treat acne. They undertook a literature review and found 82 patients with minocycline-related autoimmune symptoms. They suggest that these reactions can be divided into 4 categories:

A lupus-like illness
A syndrome resembling drug-induced lupus was noted in 36 of the 82 patients, making it the most common minocycline-related rheumatic condition. It occurs after the patient has been treated with minocycline for a period of time (mean = 30 mo, range 6–72 mo).
