This study assessed gender differences in behaviors that increase the risk of chronic disease and measured changes in these behaviors during the period of transition out of high school. The authors utilized the Youth Risk Behavior Supplement (YRBS) of the 1992 National Health Interview Survey, which provides a nationally representative sample of households throughout the United States. The YRBS measures behaviors in the areas of diet and physical activity, tobacco, alcohol and illicit substance use, sexual behaviors, and violence.
