A 4-year longitudinal follow-up study of children (male and older than 15 years of age) with ADHD assessed the association of psychotropic medication and the development of substance use disorder (SUD). Unmedicated subjects with ADHD (N=19) were at a statistically significant increased risk for any SUD at follow up (75%) compared to non-ADHD controls (N=137) who had an SUD incidence of 18% (p< .001). Medicated subjects with ADHD (N=56) were at significantly reduced risk for any SUD
