This prospective longitudinal study examined whether stressful events such as parent-adolescent disagreements influence the longitudinal course of adolescents internalizing symptoms (eg, depression, anxiety, phobias, dysthymia), and whether these, in turn, predict first onset of a depressive or anxiety disorder. White, lower-middle class families in Iowa with both biologic parents and one sibling within 4 years of the index child (age 1213 years at the start of the study) were followed over a 7-year period.
