The purpose of this study was to determine if the duration of asthma in childhood is associated with the severity of asthma. The study design used a multi-center, cross-section descriptive format. One thousand forty-one children aged 512 years were enrolled at 8 study centers in the US and Canada. Severity was assigned by historical features according to national guidelines1: 47.7% were categorized as mild and 52.3% moderate. In addition to history and physical examination, all subjects underwent pulmonary function testing, methacholine challenge, skin prick tests, and home allergy determination.
