In a randomized study, 77 patients with asthma who were admitted through the emergency room (ER) were provided with either a multi-disciplinary inpatient educational program (IEP) or routine care. This intervention at the inner city hospital of the University of Pennsylvania targeted indigent adult (ages 18 to 45) patients. The IEP included intensive asthma education as an inpatient, bedside spirometry, a phone call 24 hours after discharge, and follow-up in an outpatient asthma clinic one week after discharge.
