AAP Grand Rounds 2:67-68 (1999) Permethrin Susceptibility of Head Lice in US and BorneoSource: Pollack RJ, Kiszewski A, Armstrong P, et al. Differential permethrin susceptibility of head lice sampled in the United States and Borneo. Arch Pediatr Adolesc Med. 1999;153:969973.
This study evaluated the susceptibility of head lice to permethrin. Lice were collected from 75 children aged 5 to 8 years residing in the United States (Boise, Idaho, and Cambridge and Brookline, Mass) and from 59 boys aged 6 to 13 years living in Sabah, Borneo. Only families of US subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire soliciting information about prior infestation, involvement of family members and the use of pediculocides. Lice were placed in wells of cell culture plates containing filter paper impregnated with graded concentrations of permethrin ranging from 0.01 to 1% and untreated control discs. At least 5 lice were tested at each permethrin concentration and the tests were replicated 3 times. Lice activity was evaluated at specified times, and those that were immobile were considered dead.
A total of 263 lice were collected
