PICO

Question: Should emergency surgery be performed on all infants with neonatal torsion of the testicle?

Question type: Prognosis

Study design: Retrospective review

 

To determine the likelihood of testicular salvage in patients with neonatal torsion, investigators from Schneider Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park, NY, reviewed all cases of neonatal torsion seen at their institution between 1993 and 2007.

Prenatal history, birth history, age at presentation, results of imaging studies, pathology results, if any, and status of the contralateral testes were recorded. Cases of neonatal torsion were classified as either prenatal (noted at the time of delivery) or postnatal (noted after birth and before age one month).
