AAP Grand Rounds 20:44 (2008) Outcome of Laparoscopic Appendectomy for Perforated AppendicitisSource: Taqi E, Al Hadher A, Ryckman J, et al. Outcome of laparoscopic appendectomy for perforated appendicitis in children. J Pediatr Surg. 2008;43(5):893–895; doi:10.1016/j.jped-surg.2007.12.033[CrossRef][Medline]
To evaluate the outcome of laparoscopic (LA) versus open appendectomy (OA) in patients with perforated appendicitis, the authors, from McGill University, Montreal, reviewed the records of all patients who required surgery at the Montreal Childrens Hospital for perforated appendicitis between 2002 and 2007. All the involved surgeons perform both OA and LA and base their choice of a given procedure on patient age, sex, size, and patient/parent preference. Patients in each group were evaluated for mean operating time, median postoperative length of stay (LOS), duration of antibiotic therapy, complication rates, number of postoperative clinic visits, and readmission.
There were 213 patients in the OA group and 68 patients in the LA
