Question: Among children with perforated appendicitis, do outcomes with laparoscopic appendectomy differ from those with open appendectomy?

Question type: Therapy

Study design: Retrospective review

 

To evaluate the outcome of laparoscopic (LA) versus open appendectomy (OA) in patients with perforated appendicitis, the authors, from McGill University, Montreal, reviewed the records of all patients who required surgery at the Montreal Children’s Hospital for perforated appendicitis between 2002 and 2007.

All the involved surgeons perform both OA and LA and base their choice of a given procedure on patient age, sex, size, and patient/parent preference. Patients in each group were evaluated for mean operating time, median postoperative length of stay (LOS), duration of antibiotic therapy, complication rates, number of postoperative clinic visits, and readmission.
