To understand the ways in which parents and their teenagers communicate about issues related to diabetes management, and to identify themes and patterns of behavior that occur during these conversations, investigators from the University of Alabama at Birmingham conducted a two-hour interview in the homes of families with 11- to 15-year-old teenagers who had type 1 diabetes for at least one year.
To be included, members of each family must have been living together for at least one year, the teenagers HgbA1C had to be below 7 or above 11, and the teenager with diabetes had to be free of psychological problems, learning disabilities, and other chronic illnesses.
