Investigators from the University of Michigan sought to describe seat belt and helmet use as depicted in a sample of motion pictures, with a close look at scene context and character demographics. Trained media coders performed a content analysis of 50 top-grossing motion pictures from 2000 to 2004, examining only films that would be expected to reflect real life in the present. Scenes analyzed showed opportunities for one or more characters to comply with appropriate wearing of seat belts or helmets (for both motorized and non-motorized riding).
