To identify the dangers associated with placing children younger than 2 years to sleep in adult beds, the authors reviewed data collected by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on deaths attributed to or associated with being placed in adult beds, day beds, or waterbeds from 1990 through 1997. (A day bed is defined as an adult twin bed surrounded on 3 sides by a decorative frame.) Data sources were: consumer complaints through letters and telephone calls; media articles; reports from fire departments, police and medical examiners; follow-back investigations by CPSC staff; and death certificates from all 50 states that mention a specific consumer product.
