Pharmacological agents that inhibit the dopamine transporter (such as methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine) are the most effective in ameliorating the symptoms of ADHD. Doughtery et al measured dopamine transporter (DAT1) density in the brain by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with a labeled radioisotope. A 70% increase in DAT1 density was found in patients (6 adults, 4 of whom were females) with attention deficit hyperactivity
