A number of publications have suggested that cranberry juice may prevent urinary tract infection.1 Schlager and colleagues examined the efficacy of cranberry juice concentrate in reducing the rates of bacteriuria and symptomatic UTIs in children with neurogenic bladder. Fifteen children ages 218 years (8 female) participated in this double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study. Each child drank 2 ounces of cranberry concentrate (equivalent to 300 mL of cranberry juice) or placebo each day for 6 months (3 months with one, followed by 3 months with the other).
