Investigators from Pittsburgh studied the influence of genetics on the duration and frequency of acute otitis media (AOM) and otitis media with effusion (OME) among twins and triplets enrolled from 1982–1995. A total of 168 healthy, same-sex twin and 7 triplet sets were recruited by 2 months of age; zygosity was known in 140 sets. Follow-up was achieved in 99% of twin/triplet sets at 1 year and 90% at 2 years. Siblings were evaluated together by the same examiner.
