Thirty-nine patients with severe DKA (pH<7.1) were retrospectively identified at Hopital Bellevue, Saint-Etienne, France. Insulin therapy, hydration and hemodynamic monitoring for DKA were administered by protocol during the study period. Twenty-four patients received a 1.4% solution of sodium bicarbonate over 1 hour, while 15 received no bicarbonate.
