Using a 33-question survey, this study examined compliance with the safety requirements of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) and health care provided by physicians, trainers and ambulance personnel for football games and practices. A Medical Policies and Procedures Manual published by the WIAA and its Medical Advisory Committee provides health care guidelines for athletes. Demographics, medical coverage, medical equipment, emergency readiness and training, record keeping, and compliance with manual requirements were all assessed by a survey mailed to each schools athletic director. There was a 77% return rate from 391 schools of all sizes. Team physicians were designated in 35.5% of schools, and larger schools were more likely to have team physicians.
