Post tympanostomy tube otorrhea is a common problem affecting up to 20% of children with tympanostomy tubes. This otorrhea may be difficult to control with standard medical therapy, and topical otic preparations are often employed. Hebert et al from the Medical College of Georgia evaluated the ability of topical otic preparations to penetrate the lumen of a tympanostomy tube in an in vitro model. A model of the human head and ear was created that closely replicates the morphology and barofunction of the external ear, middle ear, and eustachian tube and approximates the conditions of a tympanostomy tube in a normal tympanic membrane.
