The Australian authors of this article performed a retrospective review of the impact upon 421 children revaccinated between 1996 and 1999 with vaccines to which they had previously experienced an adverse event following immunization (AEFI). The authors were concerned with low community immunization rates and the perception from parents and clinicians that AEFI generally contraindicated revaccination with the vaccines that caused the adverse events. Special immunization services (SIS) were organized to carefully evaluate the children with a history of AEFI and select those who might appropriately be offered revaccination. The only absolute contraindications to revaccination were a history of anaphylaxis or encephalopathy. Parental consent was obtained, and the children were observed for
