A number of hypotheses have been proposed to explain the rising incidence and prevalence of asthma. In this study, Ball et al evaluated the effects of day care attendance and family size on the future development of childhood asthma in a large cohort of Tucson, AZ, children that had been followed from birth to age 13 years. The study evaluated the possible relationship of a physician diagnosis of asthma between the ages of 6 and 13 years and the prevalence of frequent wheezing, defined as more than 3 wheezing episodes in the previous year, with the number of older siblings at home and attendance at day care during infancy.
