Patients and families may be empowered by enhancing their ability to understand and influence their health status. The authors, from the University of Iowa, hypothesize that the keystone of empowerment is information and that information sharing can improve the care of children and families. More than half of internet users obtain health information via the Web1 and two-thirds of patients in a specialty clinic indicated they plan to use the Web as a medical information source.2 Information technology influences the relationship between physician and patient as well as the patients understanding of his or her health care.
