The authors from Duke University report on 129 children ages 2 to 9 years with autistic spectrum disorder treated with fluoxetine for a mean of 32 to 36 months. Since these children were involved in an open, uncontrolled trial, the paper describes correlations between fluoxetine responsiveness and characteristics of the subject. Of the 129 subjects, 22 (17%) had an excellent response (they may have had residual problems but could no longer be identified as having autism), 67 (52%) had a good response (despite substantial behavioral improvements, these children continued to be autistic), and 40
