These authors investigated whether breastfeeding is effective for pain control during venipuncture in term neonates and comparable in effect to oral glucose combined with a pacifier. They conducted a randomized controlled trial among 180 breastfed term newborns undergoing venipuncture at Poissy-Saint Germain Hospital in Poissy, France. The infants were assigned to 1 of the following treatments while venipuncture of the dorsum of the hand was accomplished by 1 of 3 experienced nurses (45 to each treatment): breastfed; held in mothers arms without
