This randomized, controlled study investigated the effects on fetal growth, postnatal lung function, and surfactant production of single versus multiple doses of betamethasone given to mother and fetus (ewes and lambs), at different gestational ages.
There was a significant, positive effect on the alveolar surfactant pool (10-fold increase) and ventilatory efficiency index (145% increase), with dramatic effects on lung compliance (94% increase) and maximum lung volume (300% increase) in the offspring of the multiple dose maternal administration group, particularly when the dosing schedule was begun earlier in gestation.
