Mofenson summarizes 3 reports in the March 6, 1999, issue of Lancet. These were randomized, placebo-controlled Thai and African trials of twice-daily oral zidovudine (AZT) for HIV-1 infected pregnant women begun at 36 weeks gestation, continued to delivery, and given intrapartum. The regimen was 37–50% effective in preventing HIV-1 transmission from mother to infant, lowering transmission rates from 18.9–27.5% in the placebo groups to 9.4–18% in the AZT groups.
