These 2 articles discuss the use of telephone communication as a means of providing comprehensive case management services for diabetic patients via regularly scheduled “care calls” or for acute needs. Taken together, they highlight the vast possibilities of such an approach to simultaneously increase the quality and reduce the cost of care.

The first article, from Southwest Medical Associates, Las Vegas, Nev, and American Healthways, Inc., Nashville, Tenn, describes a disease management program instigated by a health care purchaser for all of their participants with diabetes.
