The rising cost of pharmaceuticals has led to debate about whether lower-cost medications from foreign countries should be allowed into the United States. The effects of high drug costs on the consumer’s behavior are not well known. This multicenter investigation surveyed 5644 US residents over age 50 who reported using prescription medications for various common chronic conditions; 4264 responded and completed the survey and 185 were excluded because they were no longer taking the prescription medication.
