The authors of this population-based cohort study set out to determine breastfeeding patterns in children with cleft lip and palate. The investigators, from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, used the national birth registry to identify all children born with clefts (n=31) over a 2-year period (2001–2002) in Porto Alegre, Brazil (total births = 40,896, total population = 1,500,000). They compared rates of breastfeeding initiation (women who started breastfeeding, regardless of duration), duration of exclusive breastfeeding, and duration of breastfeeding (exclusive and non-exclusive) among children with clefts to those of unaffected children.
