Recent studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may ameliorate severe depressive symptoms.1 The authors from Israel’s Tel Aviv and Ben Gurion Universities studied the response of childhood depression to omega-3 fatty acids in 28 children aged 6–12 years, diagnosed with major depressive disorder using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia.2 The 28 children were randomized to receive either capsules containing 1000mg of omega-3-containing oil daily or capsules containing 1000mg of oil (olive or safflower) that did not contain omega-3 fatty acids.
