Investigators from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto report on their retrospective study assessing lipid abnormalities at different disease time points, states, and corticosteroid treatment levels among 139 pediatric patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). These patients (114 female, 25 male) were seen between 1994 and 2003 and had a mean age at diagnosis of 13.7 ± 2.4 years. None of the patients were treated with statins. Fasting levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and HDL cholesterol (HDL) were measured, and LDL cholesterol (LDL) levels were calculated from these measurements. Levels were compared to sex- and age-matched control values.
