More than 55 million children in the US spend nearly one-quarter of their waking hours in school or on school property. Therefore, it is not surprising that nearly 4 million children are injured each year at school.1 Investigators from Brown Medical School, Providence, RI studied demographic and injury characteristics of children visiting emergency departments and compared nonfatal injuries sustained in school to those sustained outside of school. This retrospective cohort study of children 5–19 years old utilized data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program (NEISS-AIP) for non-fatal injuries in 2001 and 2002.
