The results of recent studies suggest that life events and chronic stress increase the risk of relapse in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).1 The authors from Barts and the London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry, Barts and London NHS Trust, and University College London conducted a study to examine the effects of experimentally induced acute psychological stress on a variety of measures of systemic and rectal mucosal inflammatory response in adult patients with inactive ulcerative colitis (UC) and in well controls.
