Question: How commonly is substance use portrayed in popular music lyrics?

Investigators from the University of Pittsburgh, Dartmouth Medical School, and the Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion of the Veterans Administration in Pittsburgh, analyzed the lyrics of Billboard magazine’s most popular songs of 2005 for content related to illicit drug and/or alcohol use. Of the 279 most popular songs, 35 songs were defined as pop, 66 as rock, 55 as R&B/hip-hop, 61 as country, and 62 as rap. Each song with a reference to substance use was coded on three domains based on social learning theory: motivations for, associations with, and consequences of substance use.
