Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, sought to determine if exposure to anesthetics might adversely affect the development of young children. They retrospectively studied the association between general anesthetic exposure before age 4 years and the development of learning disabilities (LD) in a population-based cohort consisting of children born in Olmstead County, MN, between 1976 and 1982 who remained in that county until age 5.
